This is the second in the Libations & Oscillations mixtape saga. Tonebreaker and I both decided to play our various sets at various sound camps throughout the Flipside event. The close however was a joint L&O set that we performed after the effigy burned at the Amalgam Coast camp. Well, here it is... Another twisted construct from us to you. As always we have a story to go with the audio. This one starts in the waste of a crushed empire and ends elsewhere. We are but the poets who tell the story in between.
Joseph Noctum - In The Pink
This was a piece of the live set from one of the legendary parties at the Pink Palace. With a later release on nurevolution studios podcast who hosted the music for the night. I figure a full explanation isn’t needed. We’ll just go with the write up from someone in attendance.
”One night a group of cyborgs took over the Pink Palace and turned it into a cabaret. Their demands were to dance and be entertained, otherwise, they would enslave the human race. Joseph Noctum arrived armed with two hours of calculated crunk and made them dance as if he was their positronic programmer. In the end, they danced until he trounced their blinking monocles right onto the dancefloor. This mix is offered in testament to his heroic actions that night, for he may have saved humanity that day… but only for the time being.”
Libations & Oscillations - Professor Seaglitch's Isle of Aural Decadence
The very first Libations & Oscillations mix. This one is a special mix as it cemented my longest-running musical partnership. It started with Tonebreaker wanting my help in a remix project he was working on. It then moved to us finishing an original track he was working on. That track became “Going Baroque”. The next thing we knew we were working on a live set to play together. This first one was not played as a duo as he had a DJ reunion show in Dallas to play and I had a show on the beach for Ambient Campout to play. So separated by 550 ish miles on the opposite ends of Texas we played this set. Later we released it on the nurevolution studios podcast. This marked the beginning of the journey by Dr. Dirigible (Tonebreaker) and the Outlaw Saint (Joseph Noctum).
Joseph Noctum - Peace Love Crunk
This was the first mix I did with the nurevolution studios podcast in mind for the release. Between hanging at the local burns, and playing parties together at the legendary Pink Palace in Austin I found an influence to really lean into the breakbeats and to take it even further with the midtempo glitch that was the undercurrent of both EDM scenes and the “burner” scenes. I even finished this mix up at the nurevolution studios with Trey Turner. I was used to clean, studio-produced house tracks. The fun new world of digital meant that some of the most creative glitch tracks weren’t always mastered with more than some compression.
Headrockaz - Live At Ambient Camping 34: The Howling
From 2008 to 2010 I was involved in a Glitch, Bass, Turntablism duo called, Headrockaz along with DJ Dubmatique. It was a great time for live performance experimentation. Not satisfied anymore with just mixing two records together I wanted to create a custom experience that would change and evolve with each show. This was the beginning of what would eventually become the basis of Libations & Oscillation's live shows. Having been no stranger at this point to performing at Ambient Campouts I knew this would be the perfect place to dive in. Sadly while many sets from earlier Ambient Campouts have been lost to the ether this special performance was preserved for your enjoyment.
Joseph Noctum - African Red Bush
This was originally recorded back in the 2008 timeframe, but like so many of my projects lost when the cheap hardware I was using crashed. What did we ever do before the cloud? While the unfinished project recording files we’re never recovered the 35 minutes of test rendering was. Originally this was a mix done for my new girlfriend, now wife, who had missed out on my DJ glory days. Having “retired” from DJ’ing in 2005/06 I was convinced to make her a mixtape, as hopeless romantics often do. She is way more of a hip-hop head than I, but we agreed on Downtempo and Trip-Hop. This idea what a holdover from the Noctum Records days when I thought it would be fun to do a series based on what a DJ would play in a coffeehouse rather than a club. The name is taken from a type of Roobios tea. Which is a play on the Tea House that my now wife ran back then, along with her nickname, “Red”. During its life it was played during an Ambient Camping event and then eventually release on the nurevolution studios podcast in 2010.
Joseph Noctum - Pyropolis 20X: Texas Tango
2010 Was a busy year for shows and performances. As the build up came from a few years in “retirement” once I was unleashed there was so much music to catch up on it became one of my busier years. In preparation for my first Burning Flipside, a BurningMan offshoot event in Texas, I learned the hard way to transition from vinyl to USB DJ’ing. The result was my first outing in the city of Pyropolis and throwing down set after set for the Texas Tango. It is a compilation of a weeks worth of shows played. With plenty of sound camps to play at including, Carpe Noctem, Alpha Rhythms, and Winners Circle. Every track here was dropped at some point although maybe not in this order.
Joseph Noctum - Changes
Originally released in late 2004 / early 2005 this mix was a point of stepping outside the box. No longer was I just a Deep/Progressive House DJ, but this was stepping out into other genres that would pave the way for sounds today. We have remastered this mix to bring it up to today’s dancefloor standards.
Joseph Noctum - Uprooted
This was a result of travels in Europe and picking up the early ElectroClash records which was the precursor to Electro House. Also during this time influence of a tribal house crew, two prolific progressive house producers, and the punkish feelings of youth. The result is a cross-section of my early twenties in a mix. It’s gritty, drum-heavy, and one big party.
